Set 500 metres above sea level in a lush, tropical landscape with a vast artificial lake at its heart, Kandy is a truly breathtaking location. Colonial hotels, elephants transporting logs in their trunks through the town, splendid Botanical Gardens and the amazing Temple of the Tooth are just some of the sights you’ll see here.
Don’t leave without seeing the Kandyan Dancers and Drummers who perform nightly at the Kandy Lake Club. Costumes, acrobatics, hypnotic beats and fire walking provide endless video footage to bore the folks back home with.
Take a trip down the Mahaweli Ganga to see monitor lizards, giant jellyfish, cormorants and kingfishers amongst the teeming wildlife that inhabit the area.
Another place that should be on every visitor’s itinerary is the elephant orphanage at Pinnewala where you can get up close and personal with these (usually) gentle giants and watch the babies getting their bottles; as noisy and messy an affair as their human equivalents.
