Scenes From Santa Cruz Carnival, Tenerife

It’s almost over; 12 days of hanging out with queens, both of the carnaval and drag variety, partying at parades and being wowed and occasionally shocked by some of the fancy dress costumes that have passed our eyes during carnival on Tenerife – it’s been a total blast.

Behind the scenes at the gala for the election for the Carnival Queen – before you know it everyone will be wearing parkas with sparkly bikini tops.

The only rain that fell was a ticker tape monsoon.

Dancers whirled to Latino sounds…

…and happy clowns played cheap trumpets.

Not everyone seemed caught up in the carnival spirit.

Some looked as though they’d stepped straight out of Alice in Wonderland.

Carnival Dames (nearly) wore costumes that were stunningly eye-catching.

After late night street parties, this was the last instrument you wanted to meet.

The theme for Santa Cruz carnival was ‘flower power’, the city went back to the 60s.

Mini skirts and floral designs were de riguer.

And there were weird and wonderful creatures everywhere.

You don’t have to travel to Rio to immerse yourself in a carnival whose heart beats to a sexy Latino rhythm.

The main Carnaval dates for 2013 will be between 6th and 17th February.
