Hotel Aigua Blava is one of those hotels that actually does live up to its ‘friendly family run hotel’ tag. Nestling in a ridiculously picturesque cove, its location is a breath stealing stunner that acts as an immediate de-stresser. Aquamarine coves, cool shaded gardens surrounded by Mediterranean pines and exquisite views make this a very special place to spend some time. Add a service that really does make you feel like one of the family and a restaurant that serves up delectable dishes from talented chef, Lluís Ferrés and you’ve got a hotel that you’ll want to return to again and again…which is what most of the guests do. We were gutted when it came time to check out.

Platja de Fornells, Begur

Apart from being located in a place that makes the term ‘beauty spot’ seem mundane, the four star Hotel Aigua Blava is a good base for exploring some of the highlights of Costa Brava. There are plenty of water based and rural activities nearby and the hotel sits in the centre of a triangle that has Girona inland, bohemian Cadaqués up the coast and Palamós with its sweet prawns down the coast.

Rooms
All rooms have hypnotic views of either the sea, beach or the Mediterranean gardens and are tastefully decorated in a gentle, slightly old-fashioned style that suits the ambience of the hotel perfectly. It’s the sort of place where you could imagine writers would hole up to create masterpieces of literature, sitting typing away on balconies with views that are inspirational…if distracting. Rooms all have mini bars, safes and satellite TV, but shame on anyone who actually watches TV rather than basking in the beauty of the location. Wi-Fi is available, but it isn’t great at the moment and not worth the €10 daily fee (the owners are looking into improving this).

Facilities
Swimmers and sunbathers have the choice of the pool or walking a few metres to one of the inviting coves below the hotel (no contest really) whilst there are volleyball and tennis courts for the more energetic landlubbers. There’s also a hairdresser and beauty salon – essential for a bit of ‘glamming up’ before sipping a sunset cocktail at the stylish terrace bar. The food in the restaurant, like just about everything else connected with the Hotel Aigua Blava, oozes quality, imagination and ‘mmm’ inducing flavours.
